Caricature - Week 3

This week was a value study painting over a provided sketch.

I really felt good about this from the start, and it turned out really well.
I can see the techniques learned paying off, as well as my confidence expanding.

I'm getting itchy to start bringing all of this together in my own work, but that'll have to wait for now :)

Mass Update

Digital Painting - Color Sketching

Caricature Week 1

Caricature Week 2

Things have been super busy for me, but the classes keep on rolling.
The color sketches are from Bobby's digital painting class and they lead into the final painting (which is due today, crap).

The other images are from weeks one and two of Jason's caricature course. I've got to say that Jason's course is awesome, but it is not for the weak and it will take up a lot of your time, so be prepared for long hours!

I'll have more to come in next few days!

Week 5 - The Smudge Technique

Week 5 - The Smudge Technique

5

This week involved taking a pen-and-ink sketch provided by the instructor to a grayscale painting utilizing the smudge technique along with some other technical trickery.

I thought this technique worked very well despite my initial reservations. I had seen variations of this technique before on the internet (with less than inspiring results), but the application that Bobby provides is both simple to execute, yet provides a natural looking result that is quickly implemented.

Though I can't see completing a painting using this technique alone, the techniques provided help move an illustration along very quickly!

Week 4 - Working with textures (part 2)

Week 4 - Working with Textures (part 2)

4

This week was applying textures to enhance an existing painting. Overall the technique was ok, and there were a few tips that were really good. The results turned out well, and the overall integration of the lessons so far is coming together well.

Off to start the next lesson!

Week 3 - Working with Textures

Week 3 - Working with Textures

3

This week we worked with a single texture to create the value's on the provided sketch.
After a misstep in the process (and a late night to start over and recover) I think this turned out pretty well. The technique shown was something I had never heard of before, which is really saying something with my extensive photoshop experience!

Week 2 - Colorizing Black and White

Week 2 - Colorizing Black and White

2

Week 2 has come and gone. Things are flying and I'm learning a lot of useful information.

This week takes a black and white painting to a finished colored state. Though the technique sounds easy using some built in photoshop goodness (but not what you'd think), it actually ended up being a lot more involved than I though it would. However, the technique presented also gave far better results than any technique I tried before this class.

On a side note, the work coming out of schoolism's caricature class is amazing, and I think I will end up enrolling in that class as well.

Week 1 - Visualizing through darkness

1

Week 1 - Visualizing through darkness

This was an assignment where we painted over one of Bobby's drawings starting with a very dark base, and slowly layering in light and shadow.

I had trouble with the settings at first, but once I became comfortable I started having a lot more fun.

Overall, I think I did well.

In my never-ending list of things I want to do, I have finally forced myself to get back into digital art. To jumpstart the learning process, I have enrolled in Bobby Chiu's 9-week digital painting course at schoolism.com.

I wanted to get some kind of blog going to show the work I'm doing, and chronicle my progress in the class.

So far, I really enjoy it, and am feeling some real progress (after a frustrating start)

I'm turning in the first assignment tomorrow, and should have it up here soon with my thoughts on how it went.
